Getting Ready For Kingsport, George Jackson
10/05/2007 -
Wow! Another year has gone by and what a year it has been. The TBC Annual Meeting at Bellevue Baptist fulfilled all the excitement that led up to it. I was honored to nominate Kevin Shrum for President of CTB and to be nominated myself for Vice President. I hope my service will be as rewarding to the organization as it has been to me.
Last years Annual Meeting showed the Tennessee Baptist conservative movement was not dead. In fact we are alive and moving forward to doctrinal accountability. Last year we made great gains. In ’06 messengers voted to affirm the Baptist Faith & Message. Why? Because we wanted a statement of faith that would show we stand for something. Tennessee Baptists understand that anyone can say they believe the Bible. That is not the issue. The issue is what you believe about the Bible. Do you believe it is inerrant? Do you believe it says Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation?
We also wanted to know if those who were selected to serve us affirmed the BF&M as we (the TBC) affirmed the statement. It is our committee and board members and our trustees that are given a unique trust with our Convention, students and finances. We want to know if they stand with us on the BF&M. That was and is the desire of the Convention Messengers.
We are only weeks away from the ’07 Annual Meeting. What are the issues this year? The first officer elected will be president. It is time the person that is entrusted with that position is entrusted with responsibilities throughout the year. Surrounding states honor the will of the messengers by allowing the president to have the power to appoint. It is time we do the same. Our president should have the same level of respect as that office holds in the surrounding states. I am delighted that Tom McCoy will be nominated for that office. He has my whole support. Also, Tim McGee will be nominated for first vice president. Tim’s father was a faithful minister and well known throughout our state. Tim is the pastor of a growing church and has a wonderful family legacy. I will be thrilled to cast my vote for him. Todd Stinnett will be nominated for 2nd VP. He is a young pastor with wisdom and courage way beyond his years. He is a conservative East Tennessee pastor. I’ll be voting for him also.
We have a young slate of officers this year but many wise men are in support of the officer candidates and many other actions. We are united in the belief that the TBC cannot move forward until change in executive leadership occurs. Our hands are tied with Belmont, the selling of our convention offices and the disconnect that our executive leadership has with the local church. We as a convention need to move forward and Tennessee Baptists across the state are united on how to that—new executive leadership. It is not because of age, or simply a different method of conducting business. It is because Tennessee Baptists are tired of being on cruise control. We are tired of the disconnect between Brentwood and our local church. As Tennessee Baptists we desire to once again be united under a goal. That has not and will not occur under our current leadership. That is why, out of a love for the TBC, a concern for the future of our convention, and for youth, college students and young couples who don’t know what the TBC even Is, I am asking for the executive director to announce his retirement. It is for the good of our convention.
Last year we learned a valuable lesson. The real business of the TBC Annual Meeting occurs in the last few hours after many have went home. Let us resolve to stay until the gavel comes down for the last time. Pastors, please have a deacon or preacher boy lead your Wednesday night activities. We need you at the Annual Meeting until the very end! Other issues may arise at the Annual Meeting, they also seem to. We as conservative Tennessee Baptists must stand together.
